TitleApril 6: to Madrid
To avoid having to fly too early, I'm going to Madrid. The hotel is close to the airport and a large park. Too big for me to see completely, but ideal for enjoying the weather. I heard quite a few birds, but taking a photo is something else.

TitleApril 7: to the hotel in Trujillo
The group arrives around noon and after some hassle we can go to Trujillo. It is about a 2. 5 hour drive from busy Madrid to the steppe area where Trujilloin is located. We already see a few species that are not (yet?) common in the Netherlands, such as the bee-eater and the black-winged stilt.

TitleApril 8: the steppes around Trujillo
The first full birding day we spend on the steppes looking for the small and large bustards of the Spanish Imperial Eagle. We mainly learn that the stairs are located at a great distance from the road. You need a telephoto lens or better yet a scope to see the bird spot. For me it does not yet produce any useful photos of stairs, but it does yield photos of a Spanish Imperial Eagle and a blue magpie. Smaller birds sometimes cooperate better, as the photos show.

Title9 april: Vegas Altas
In the Vegas Altas area we look for stairs again. It is an area where there is also a lot of (irrigation) water, which in turn produces other birds. We see a lot, including great bustards, blue magpies and swallows.

TitleApril 10: Monfragüe National Park
The National Park of Monfragüe with its rock formations, kilometers of slopes covered with Mediterranean forests and deep river valleys is very beautiful. The park is home to a number of unparalleled birdwatching points. At the Salto del Gitano we look out over the Tagus River, to a large rock formation, the Peña Falcón, where many Griffon Vultures and some Egyptian Vultures and Black Storks breed.

TitleApril 11: The old town of Mérida
In Mérida itself we can see nesting storks from the impressive Roman aqueduct. Along the Guadiana River we see many water birds and a nesting Penduline Tit.

TitleApril 12: Little Bustard
We look for species such as Black-bellied and White-bellied Sandgrouse, Little and Great Bustard and the Crested Cuckoo, but finding them is difficult, and taking a photo is even more difficult. Fortunately, other animals are also plants to watch. And I have a small staircase, a small dot in a field of grass.

TitleApril 13: Via the Arrocampo reservoir to the airport
The last day a nice variety of plants and animals. We see the first orchid at the lake, a species of which there are at least hundreds. There is a lot to see around the reservoir. The wood monkey is not in the photo, but it did show up above the reeds.
